The Storm King

The Storm King (mockup book cover)

Xander Savero is reeling from the loss of his family and the love of his life. But there’s no time for his broken heart when his kingdom is in peril. His cruel cousin is chipping away at Argaria’s borders, leaving a trail of violence in his wake, and that’s just the beginning.

The fiercest opposition comes from within Xander’s own court, where nobles speculate about his parentage, commoners think he’s an outsider, and assassins wait poised for the moment he drops his guard. Xander strives to put an end to the upheaval by marrying a princess from a stronger, more established kingdom. His decision plunges the Argarian court into a chaotic three-week festival, at the end of which he will choose a bride.

But more new faces at court mean more threats to Xander’s life, compelling him to call in reinforcements from old friends. Cecilia’s arrival is more hindrance than help, putting him face to face with the woman who shattered his heart, while he’s still picking up the pieces. Together, Xander, Cecilia, and their friends must fight against a series of ancient spells, a spy in their midst, and their own haunted pasts to take down their faceless enemy before Xander and the kingdom both fall.

What readers are saying

While book 2 of The Lost God series, The Memory Curse, playfully expanded the world with the introduction of a godly cast of characters, I’ll long remember The Storm King for the emotional depths Sheila brings to each character’s story. It’s impossible not to cheer and gasp as unexpected alliances are made and characters, for better or worse, emerge as more than what they seem. These surprises are well-paced and well-earned, though nothing can prepare you for the emotional impact.

This book was immediately such an easy 5 star read for me. This series has escalated itself up to one of my absolute faves of all time. I could read it over and over again, and probably will. I wish I had the words to fully articulate what this book made me feel.

No matter which side of the Xander/Rainer battle you’re on, I think you’ll be happy by the end of this book. The twists and turns had me gasping at a few moments and throwing my kindle across the room the next. This ends on a bit of a cliffhanger so just prepare yourself for the torture.

I don’t know if I can muster up the right words to describe this masterpiece. This was devastatingly beautiful. I didn’t think that this would top book 2, The Memory Curse, but it did. The amount of love, happiness, longing, sorrow, grief, pain, and anguish that poured out of the pages was so overwhelmingly good. There were so many facets here that would leave you breathless because the writing to me felt raw and tangible. Sheila did a fantastic job balancing everything out with humor that didn’t feel forced, rather realistic in times of peril or heaviness and that’s what made it all so impactful. She gave us the untethered reality of the aftereffects of war, death, loss, and betrayal; and it’s how she starts the book out. Ballsy for it being so heavy to begin with, but it 100% paid off.

Bella (Goodreads)

Sheila is a master at balancing laugh out loud humor with moments of deep turmoil so raw that you aren’t sure you’ll be able to claw yourself back from them. She portrays mental health in a way that feels so real and heavy and she doesn’t shy away from extremely difficult conversations. It is beautiful in the most deliciously heartbreaking way.

There’s a big focus on Xander and his personal journey. I really loved seeing his character develop. He and Cece have so many similarities, but seeing how they grow as individuals in this book was really amazing.

Also, the spice is SPICING in this book. It is 🥵🥵🥵 I’m not saying anything else. Read it and find out.
